North American P-51 Mustang

http://www.spitcrazy.com/mustang.htm
The North American  P-51 Mustang is a World War 2 fighter plane designed to escort U.S. and R.A.F. bombers in to Germany and provide fighter support. It carries 6 .50 caliber M2 Browning machine guns (3 in each wing), and has a range of 1,300 miles with fuel tanks. The Mustang is a World War 2 legend and has been credited 4,950 enemy planes shot down, the most of any Allied figher in WW2. The Mustang was also known for its superior speed of 437 mph and a service ceiling of 41,900 ft. The mustangs range allowed it to escort bombers all the way into Germany, provide air support, and then fly all the way back to bases in Great Britain. Before the Mustang was introduced, Allied fighters could only escort bombers halfway across the English Channel before they had to return to base for fuel. The Mustang was the last plane to help the Allies clear the skies of the Luftwaffe. The Mustangs did not end with WW2, it also provided ground support during the Korean War. The Mustang is by far the most recognized airplane in history. Each plane cost about 51,000 dollars.

Lockheed AC-130 Spectre Gunship

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_AC-130
The AC-130 Spectre Gunship is a variant of the C-130 transport produced by Lockheed. It is used for close air support, and bombing raids. The Spectre Gunship can carry a variety of weapons from a 105mm cannon, a 40mm cannon, to dual 20mm cannons or a single 25mm cannon. Since the weapon systems are only on one side of the plane, the Spectre is required to fly a steady orbit over the target area. This allows the Spectre to bring all of its weapons to use for a long period of time. Because the Spectre Gunship is a big, and slow moving aircraft, it uses flares(shown above) to defend against missile strikes. The Spectre Gunship costs from 132.4 to 190 million dollars per plane.

Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-22_Raptor

The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is a twin engined stealth fighter plane that was developed in 1981 by Lockheed Martin to suit the needs of a new fighter to replace the aging F-16 and F-15 models. The F-22 was designed to be an ATF or Advanced Tactical Fighter. It was the first fighter plane to carry stealth capabilities, and still be agile enough to perform in dogfights. The way it achieves this is by carrying all of its weapons inside the plane itself, along with Top Secret material used to reflect radar beams. The Raptor has 3 internal weapons bays and can carry up to 8 missiles at a time. It also carries a 20mm rotary cannon inside the  right wing. Carrying the weapons inside also allow the Raptor to have a high speed. Its two Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines give it an estimate of about 35,000 pounds of thrust. This allows the Raptors cruising speed to be about Mach 1.82 (1,220 mph), and over Mach 2 (1,320 mph) with afterburners on. Although the F-22 is a superior plane, its cost of 150 million dollars per plane, makes it very difficult to mass produce.
